Villa Students Celebrate Law Day By
Finding Solutions to Everyday Challenges
Goffstown, NH - Students at
Villa Augustina School were actually excited to think up solutions to everyday
challenges like "How do you leave
cat food out without the dog snacking?" when Patent Attorney Scott Asmus of
Maine & Asmus of Nashua, (parent of Villa students Francesca and Elizabeth
from Amherst) spoke to them about intellectual property in observance of Law
Day early this month.
Law Day is set aside as a special day of celebration by the American people
in appreciation of their liberties. Each May, attorneys are encouraged to host
programs focusing on our heritage of liberty under law and how the rules of
law makes our democracy possible.
When Mr. Asmus spoke at the Villa he showed students slides of some inventions
and trademarks that are still part of our daily lives, like Pepsi, Coke, and
Mickey Mouse, all protected by U.S. Trademarks dating back to the early 1900s.
He also showed some slides on inventions that had received patents but did
not make it in the marketplace, such as a life saving apparatus that looked
like human wings to help people get out of tall buildings during emergencies.
"The students really enjoyed hearing Mr. Asmus talk about Intellectual Property
law because he tied it to things they could understand and get excited about." said
Villa Principal Jack Daniels . "He connected law to aspects of their everyday
life and showed them that law is more than cop shows on television. It's part
of their daily lives and protects even things like books, pictures, songs,
movies and software that receive copyrights."
